SS-31 is a peptide designed to go directly inside your mitochondria — the energy-producing structures in your cells. Most compounds can't get in there. SS-31 can. Once inside, it protects a critical structure in the mitochondrial membrane that is responsible for producing most of your cellular energy. When mitochondria are damaged or aging, they produce less energy and more harmful byproducts. SS-31 helps fix that. It is being studied for heart failure, kidney disease, and general aging-related energy decline.
Inside your mitochondria, there is a fatty molecule called cardiolipin that acts like the glue holding the energy-production machinery together. As we age or when cells are under stress, cardiolipin gets damaged, and the whole energy system becomes less efficient. SS-31 binds to cardiolipin and protects it. This reduces the production of harmful free radicals (the byproducts of energy production that damage cells) and keeps the energy-production chain running smoothly. The result is more energy output from each cell and less cellular damage over time.
